Tom: A National Obsession

I'm a stats whore, I freely admit to that. I casually drop the name Tom Williams (along with Dancing With The Stars), sit back and watch the hits roll in.

And boy do they ever!!!

I'm estimating that half of the referrals to my site are from people searching for Tom Williams. Hello to you, reader, chances are you are interested in the most famous dancer in the country at the moment, even more famous that me!

Unfortunately, I have nothing in the way of concrete information about Tom, I am very sorry, but what I do have is observations about the craze that is Tom. For instance, people out there are wondering if there were perhaps more than one gay celebrity finalist. Also, not surprisingly, people were rather keen on the strip-tease that Tom performed for the final showcase dance, hoping to find "bare tom williams dancing [with the] stars photo[s]. (Personally I think people should be searching for "bare tom williams great outdoors", that lad simply can't keep his kit on, HOORAY!) I can't think of any Aussie more popular than him at the moment. If I were a complete slut for stats I would post the pictures that were emailled to me of said dance, which would see me become more popular that Kottke.

Anyway, it's been over a week since the finals of Dancing With The Stars and I still haven't gotten around to watching the video of it. (Meanwhile are Seven bringing out the DVD? Seems to me it's the obvious thing to do but what would I know?...) It was rather inevitable, really, and Tom totally deserved it. Not only did he have a decent grasp of technique (especially when you consider that he's only a beginner compared to other dancers who have trained since the moment they stood on two feet) but he was able to perform and completely captivate the audience, cheeky fellow. This is nothing that I haven't said before...

What I would like to say, though, is that I think Ian actually did deserve to be in the finals, beyond the popularity vote but AS A DANCER. Sure, he lacks quite alot of fundamental techniques, but the fact is that Ian and Nat couldn't possibly have been the only two people shedding a tear at the end of "Last Dance". It really does seem like Ian and Nat both have a special bond, I believe that that was apparent in the dancing. Anyone (except maybe Derryn) can do steps but it takes a certain amount of trust and openness to get out on the floor and show that kind of emotion while dancing. It's something that the judges wanted Holly and Mark to do (and they did it in their final Cha Cha) and here's Ian and Nat having that quality by the bucketloads and were able to show it. It may not come with beautiful movement but it doesn't mean to say that it's not beautiful. Oh and by the way I loved the beginning, dancing in silence and in silhouette, but not because I'm a contemporary dancer. So to Ian and Nat, good on you. And sorry that I voted for Tom!
