My favourite buildings #1
While trying to find information about this topic I happened upon this site: SkyscraperPage.com which is quite possibly now one of my favourite sites. Look at all those tall beautiful things. And lots of useless trivia such as:
- The Gold Coast, with less than half the population of Adelaide, as five times as many skyscrapers. (adds to the overwhelming evidence that Adelaide, at one million people, is quite possibly the biggest country town in the world.)
- Brisbane has more but Perth build them taller (though this won't be true for long) and Auckland beat both on both counts.
- Sydney has more skyscrapers than Hong Kong (!!!) but is beaten to the world top ten by Tokyo.
- The tallest building under construction at the moment is in Dubai, a 160 floor 700-odd metre beheamoth, completely dwarfing New York's under-construction Freedom Tower.
(Update: I'm more than just a little bit sceptical about some of the numbers. I mean, AS IF Sydney has more skyscrapers than Hong Kong. Hong Kong is nothing BUT tall buildings!_
A look at Australia's top towers.
So anyway, back to the task at hand. As you may have gathered, I really like skyscrapers. With the imminent completion of BT Tower on Hunter Street, complete with footy goals, it's time to assess what buildings I love in the Sydney skyline, for there are quite a few (there's also a few shockers but let's forget about them for a sec).
And so, in no particular order, lets start here:
Australia Square
Quite possibly Australia's first skyscraper, complete with SHOCK HORROR al fresco dining and public art, it also houses my dentist. It is also right next door to my gym. My most favourite thing about this building is that it isn't even a square. Besides the irony, it's actually quite cool as a design element too, it's a novelty to walk through circular corridors inside it. Perched on top of a quaint little plaza, it's a really simple design idea done really well. Nowadays it gets lost in the Sydney skyline, but that's something else that I like about it. You can be walking down George Street or some random City North street and suddenly it appears, tucked away behind a large ugly milk crate on stilts.
More buildings to come...
Meanwhile, excited about this, like someone's applied Photoshop's Halftone Pattern filter to an entire building.
